I always prefer photographing in availible light – or Rembrandt-light I like to call it – so you get the natural modulations of the face. It makes a more alive, real, and flattering portrait.

#53,562 Buffalo River Downriver at Ozark Campground
This is a straight ahead three-exposure HDR image of the Buffalo River at the south end of the Ozark Campground looking down river. HDR enabled me to both capture the dramatic sky and open up the shadows in relatively bright sunlight.
#53,592 Buffalo River Bluff at Ozark Campground
This is one of my favorite HDRs in that it captures the luminousity of the Buffalo River. This photo also displays one of my favorite approaches to HDR. In this case I created an conventional three-exposure HDR and then, in Photoshop, superimposed a conventional version of the photo in a top layer, then adjusted it's transparency to capture the luminous depth of HDR, and the detail enhancement of the regular image. I have not read of anyone else working this way. I think it is a valuable avenue of exploration in HDR methods.
#54,754 Sunrise at Big Hollow, Boxley Valley, Buffalo National River
This image is another straight ahead three exposure HDR. Sunrises create enormously difficult conditions to capture with severe lighting contrasts. I like to take long tonal scale photos so HDR a basic tool in my work. This technique allows me to both render the sky properly and still capture details in the shadows.
